Why Do Charter Schools Need the Co-op?

The provision of special education services has been a challenge for public charter schools in Washington, DC and across the U.S. For many charters, a lack of financial resources is coupled with a complex set of federal special education regulations that charter school leaders must navigate. While school districts in most states provide special education services to charter schools, the DC Public School system does not. A current leadership vacancy at the state level leaves charters on their own to decipher and comply with special education policy and procedures.

We Are Here To Help

The Co-operative provides technical assistance to charter schools and professional development services for special and general education teachers. We work to develop good working relationships with personnel at DC Public Schools to facilitate information sharing and service delivery to special education programs in charter schools. The Co-operative ensures that charter schools are represented in policy discussions and that the District's charters have access to professional development, funding, and other opportunities that are available to DCPS. See our services section for more details.
